Master Interviews

Filming master interviews is a big part of my work as a DOP. I'm often asked to film the master interviews for a series or documentary, often as part of an existing project or to supplement footage that has already been shot by the Director. I try to create a very stylised look with the interviews, this is created by using large soft sources of light. My favourite lights are the Aputure 300dii / 600d which I then soften using the light domes or lanterns. I often soften the light further by placing a trace frame in front of the light. This creates the most beautiful light source for the interviewee. As I'm working mainly with soft light, I often have to use large flags and negative fill to shape and control the light. It's a lot of work but the results are worth it.

I like to use prime lenses on the cameras, I have a full set of the Canon Cine Primes which have a lovely warm look to them. I often film using 2 cameras, 1 as the master shot with either a 50mm or 85mm and then a slight tighter version with an 85mm or 100mm. I try to shoot with the lenses at T1.4, this gives a wonderful look with shallow depth of field which blurs the background and creates the 'bokeh' effect. The combination of the soft lighting and prime lenses give the interview that 'cinematic' look.

If you're looking for a DOP to film your master interviews then do get in touch.

Here are a few examples taken from my recent projects.
