About me

From an early age, I had a passion for TV and photography. I have always wanted to become a cameraman and work in TV. After school, I attended Ravensbourne College of Art and Design to study Television Programme Operations. The course was perfect and gave me a great insight into the television crafts. After graduation, I started my career as a trainee camera assistant at HTV, the local ITV company in Cardiff. Here, I got to work with some great DOPs on a variety of programmes, including studio, OB’s, and drama. I then travelled to Plymouth and worked for Westcountry TV as a camera operator. This was my first job as a cameraman at the age of 21. I worked on local news, sport, and feature programming. It was a great place to learn and hone my skills. After two years, I joined Reuters as the Bristol-based cameraman, working for Sky News and GMTV. This was a big step from working on local to national news. A year later, I moved to London with Reuters as a senior cameraman. This was a huge jump for me, and at the age of 25 I was working on major national and worldwide news stories. I spent time in hostile environments filming in war zones in Iraq, Kosovo, and Serbia. I covered and worked on the biggest news stories of the day, including the death of Diana Princess of Wales, General Elections, and global news stories. It was a thrilling time, and certainly a time I will cherish and look back on with fondness.

Although working in national news was exciting, I felt my passion was in documentaries, so in 2000 I took the plunge and went freelance. I started working on a variety of programmes, one of my favourites was working on the popular ITV travel programme “Wish you were here”. I got to travel to some amazing places and countries, a huge contrast to my time at Reuters filming in war zones! Working with high-profile presenters and travelling really was thrilling. At the time,“Wish you were here” often used to attract 12 million viewers, it was great to be part of the team. Through a director at "Wish you were here" I was asked to film an hour documentary for ITV with Chris Tarrant, "Chris Tarrant in the land of the polar bears." This was my first stand-alone hour documentary I filmed for ITV. I was 31 at the time and since then, I’ve filmed over seventy hour documentaries for the major networks.

After a few years freelancing, I received a call from an exec, Natalie Wilkinson. She was putting together a new travel / adventure series. Ben Fogle,“New Lives in the Wild” would I like to be involved? This was a defining moment for me, and I felt great pride in working on the first episode of the "New Lives in the Wild" series. The series has now been established for 14 years, and over that time, I’ve filmed over 40 hour programmes and travelled to some of the remotest countries and places on Earth. Working on the series is a real joy; we get to meet some amazing contributors, and it’s a real privilege for me to hear the stories they share with us. I won an award for the photography on one of the episodes shot in Morocco and have gone on to film several stand-alone 90-minute feature documentaries with Ben. The highlight, travelling to Chernobyl to film a feature documentary on the 30th anniversary of the nuclear disaster, "Inside Chernobyl”.

Throughout my career, I’ve filmed pretty much in every situation. I’ve filmed in the Arctic, the desert, jungles, mountain regions, deserted islands, the Australian outback, and the savannahs of Africa. I've met some extraordinary people along the way. I’ve filmed the late Queen Elizabeth many times, the King, Prime Ministers, US Presidents, film stars, and even convicted killers on Death Row! In my 34 years as a DOP, I really have built up a wealth of experience to cover any situation.

If you’re looking for a DOP for your next project, please get in touch. It will be a pleasure to talk through what I can bring to your productions in terms of visuals but also experience. I’m sure we can make it fun along the way too.

I look forward to hearing from you.
