Lost Worlds Detroit

Once at the heart of the American motor industry, and the birthplace of a music genre that earned global recognition for black artists, Detroit was a prosperous and thriving city. But now parts of the city look like a war zone, with dilapidation and devastation in every neighborhood. Ben sets out to explore the all too evident underbelly of Detroit as he tries to discover what went wrong and how the City is beginning its recovery.

Filming in the abandoned Car Factory and High School was quite an experience. You just can’t comprehend the scale of the destruction and abandonment in Detroit, even though this was a highlight of the trip, it was also desperately sad. I was happy to film the locations to show the viewers how bad it can get when society breaks down, it should be a warning to everyone of what can happen when things go so wrong.

Lost Worlds Scottish Islands

Ben explores Scotland's abandoned islands, inhabited 1,000 years ago and owned by the same family for generations. Ben also heads to Swona, whose first inhabitants were the Vikings, and later a multi-generational family who shared their island with a feral herd of cattle. He also explores the towering prehistoric cliffs of St Kilda.

Filming the Scottish Islands episode was a real challenge. The main challenge was getting to the remote islands, we sailed on a converted fishing trawler in the rough Atlantic seas to get to the Islands. Getting to St Kilda took over 24 hours in a force 8 gale! The sea conditions were so rough that filming onboard was really difficult and dealing with the sea sickness was a real problem. Flying the Drone off the fishing trawler had its own difficulties, it was possibly the most challenging flying I’ve ever had to do. The risk of losing the drone into the sea was very high. Luckily the drone survived the trip!
