Filming World's Most Dangerous Roads for DAVE. Renegade Pictures
It was great to be asked to be the DOP on 3 episodes of "World's Most Dangerous Roads" for Dave UK TV, produced by Renegade Pictures.
The series follows famous comedians as they drive some of the most spectacular and dangerous roads in the World. I travelled to 4 counties while filming the series, Turkey with Joe Wilkinson and Zoe Lyons, South Africa and Lesotho with Phil Wang and Pierre Novellie and then Romania with the Derry Girls Saoirse Monica Jackson and Jamie Lee O'Donnell.
The Lesotho episode was incredible to film, travelling through the kingdom of the skies was spectacular for a DOP, the landscapes were simply stunning. We started in South Africa in 30c heat and ended up at Sani Pass where it was snowing heavily. I've never before had such a contrast in weather on a shoot. It made for great content and Phil and Pierre coped with the difficult roads and conditions very well, with only a few mishaps along the way. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the amazing Maletsunyane Falls, Phil and Pierre abseiled down the waterfall which made for a great terrifying sequence.
Filming the series involved setting up a car rig inside the main car, we used 3 cameras inside the car, 2 Z Cams, and 1 Gopro 11. The Z cams were great as there compact cameras that can be rigged tightly to the windscreen, the GoPro was used to film the 2 shot. I then rigged 2 additional GoPro's to the outside of the car, one looking forward getting the POV and then one close to the ground for some dramatic shots. The main camera was the Sony FX9 and a Sony A7siii on a gimbal to get the travelling shots. Then of course the Mavic 3 Cine drone created the aerial shots. Looking after all the cameras was quite a challenge and I must thank our DIT Sylvia for taking care of all the data which was huge! Often over 1TB a day!
The series airs on Dave Sunday night at 8pm and all episodes are available to stream.
